Supporting children’s behaviour
By Stuart Harris, Upper Primary Leader.
At BISS, we embrace a restorative approach to wellbeing and pastoral care. This method focuses on nurturing relationships and understanding the impact of actions on others.
Our restorative approach includes:
Building Relationships: We prioritize nurturing relationships and taking the time to strengthen them.
Listening and Responding: We listen to all sides of an issue calmly and empathetically.
Creating Trust and Safety: We inspire trust and ensure both physical and psychological safety.
Encouraging Self-Expression: We support the open expression of thoughts and feelings.
Understanding Impact: We help children appreciate the effect of their behaviour on others' thoughts and feelings.
Collaborative Solutions: We seek solutions together, understanding that this process often involves compromise.
While our students generally exhibit high levels of respectful behaviour, they are still learning and may not always make the right choices. When issues arise, we ask:
What has happened?
Who has been affected and how?
What needs to happen to make things right?
This approach focuses on repairing and restoring relationships, helping students develop strategies for conflict resolution. By allowing students to reach their own agreements, they take ownership and are more likely to adhere to them.
