Revolutionizing Math Education at BISS: A Unique Approach to Building Strong Foundations

At the British International School of Stockholm (BISS), we do things differently when it comes to teaching mathematics. Rooted in innovative strategies and a deep commitment to individual learning needs, our approach sets us apart from other, more traditional ‘one size fits all’, methods.

Here’s what makes math teaching at BISS so unique:

A Dynamic, Flexible Grouping System

From Year 2 onwards, we take an inclusive yet tailored approach to grouping students. Unlike traditional models where students are divided into "top," "middle," or "bottom" sets, we teach the same curriculum objectives but adjust group sizes and pace based on each learner’s needs.

  • Smaller groups for deeper support: Students who need a little more time and guidance work in smaller groups, supported by extra staff and a slower pace to build confidence and mastery.

  • Larger, faster-paced groups for challenge: Confident mathematicians join larger groups that move swiftly through the curriculum and engage in tasks designed to stretch their understanding with greater depth and breadth.

With 3–4 staff members assigned to each year group, we can adapt and respond to student needs in real-time. This setup fosters an environment where every learner thrives, regardless of their starting point.

The CPA Approach: Building Understanding, Step by Step

At BISS, we don’t just teach students how to get the right answer; we teach them why the method works. Our Primary team uses the CPA approach—Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract—to lay a secure foundation of mathematical understanding:

  1. Concrete: Students first explore concepts using hands-on resources like counters, blocks, or other manipulatives. These tangible tools help make abstract ideas feel real.

  2. Pictorial: Once students grasp the concept concretely, they move to visual representations, such as drawings or diagrams, to bridge their understanding.

  3. Abstract: Finally, students apply their learning to written problems, connecting the numbers and symbols to the underlying concepts they’ve explored.

This method ensures that every student develops a contextual understanding of mathematical ideas. By progressing step-by-step, students gain the confidence and skills they need to tackle increasingly complex problems.

Depth Over Speed: Ensuring True Mastery

At BISS, we challenge our students to go beyond simply completing the curriculum. For us, it’s not about how quickly a student can learn a new topic but how well they can apply their understanding in varied contexts.

For example, confident learners might explore broader, real-world applications of mathematical concepts or tackle open-ended problems that encourage creativity and critical thinking. Meanwhile, those needing extra support work on reinforcing their skills with ample adult guidance.

This dual focus on depth and support ensures that every child at BISS develops not only competence but also a love for mathematics.

Why It Matters

The way we teach math at BISS empowers students to become problem-solvers and independent thinkers. By providing tailored support, building solid foundations, and fostering curiosity, we give every child the tools they need to succeed—both in the classroom and beyond.

At BISS, math isn’t just about numbers; it’s about nurturing confident learners who understand, question, and apply their knowledge to the world around them.
