The BISS Cultural Awareness Project: Celebrating Our Diversity

Inspired by a Year 13 student, Sarah, who suggested that we could do more to celebrate the cultural diversity within the BISS community, Mrs. Lucy Lindgren and a group of Year 13 students launched the Cultural Awareness Project. They produced a video highlighting the importance of respecting and celebrating diversity that was shared with students in Years 7-9, setting the stage for this initiative.

Mrs. Lindgren then collaborated with the Humanities department to develop lessons across History, Geography, PSHE, and Thinking Skills. The theme "Objects Connect People" was chosen, and students were tasked with creating an exhibition showcasing special cultural objects or practices that hold personal significance.

Through insightful presentations and engaging discussions, students shared their stories, revealing how these cultural elements shape their identities and connect them to the global community. This captivating project celebrates the rich tapestry of cultures within our vibrant community.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Year 13 students who spearheaded this initiative, under the guidance of Mrs. Lucy Lindgren, and to the dedicated Humanities teachers who brought this project to life.

As one of our Year 7 students aptly observed, "I used to think joining BISS was just joining a normal school, but now I realise the school truly puts effort into making it international—and I love that.
